Pediatric Ophthalmology Consultation

Pediatric Ophthalmology

If awareness about eye diseases was more than what is prevalent, then Ophthalmologists could prevent many of the blinding diseases. In the case of children with eye problems the primary decision maker(parent) is often not the subject with the problem. Additionally, the decision maker (parent) is often not aware of the problem, as the children are unable to express their discomfort. Educating parents regarding perceptions and awareness of eye diseases among children is important in this context. We at “ VISION FIRST” have been giving talks to parents and doing eye camps in schools over the past few years to increase awareness among parents.

There are many ways by which awareness can be increased among parents-

  • Schools can make it mandatory for all children to have an eye checkup every 6 months. The schools can help by checking with the children if they have been to an eye doctor. In turn “VISION FIRST” will provide a detailed report of each child examined to both the parents and the school.

  • To organize talks in schools for the parents/teachers so that they can be given information about eye diseases and have many of their doubts cleared and questions answered. One of the best times to do this would be during the PTA meetings that are held in the schools.

  • Schools can organize daytrips to an eye-hospital. This way the parents can come along too and learn about various eye problems.

  • To organize screening camps in schools to enable us to detect children with eye problems and then follow them up at the clinic for their treatment.

  • To organize talks for groups of young parents. These groups could be members of a housing society or members of a gymkhana.
